Alla Prima Demo
June 3, 2017 @ 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM$25.00
Alla Prima, directly translated from Italian, is “at once.” It is a fresh technique, allowing for completing a painting in one session. It is sometimes referred to as “wet on wet.” It’s typically worked in two layers. The first layer is painted with pigment heavily laden with oily medium. The second layer is painted simply with pigment. Owing to the wetness of the paint, much of the color mixing occurs directly on the canvas. The technique allows for spontaneity, lovely fresh brush strokes and surprising glorious color.
Alla Prima is a painting technique that has been employed as early as the 16th century by the Flemish artist, Frans Hals. Rembrandt sometimes used the technique, as did many of the Impressionists. An American favorite, Bob Ross painted wet on wet – Alla Prima; completing his landscapes in one half hour.
