Lisa Goldfarb, “Wallace Stevens in Sound and Music”

November 1, 2016 @ 12:30 PM - 1:45 PM

Free

Although Wallace Stevens concedes that the conventional use of music in poetry  — “metrical poetry with regular rhyme schemes repeated stanza after stanza” — is “a bit old hat,” he still insists on the viability of the musical analogy for modern poetry.  Looking at both essays and poems, Lisa Goldfarb will show how Stevens uses musical methods to forge a relationship with his readers, transforming us into musical readers.  Stevens tunes his voice in his poems to invite the reader into his poetry, summoning us to experience the sounds of language in new and unexpected ways.
